 Module Preparation

- ** This is guest page

The essential element for a module is the student text. Other elements (e.g., code, images, videos, etc.) may or may not be submitted along with the student text, but we do not claim the existence of a module for a particular topic until the student text exists. The motivation for this approach is that both the instructor and the student need the common "base" that the student text provides in order to begin thinking about instructing and learning the material. Following submission of a student text, it will be peer-reviewed and then stored in our module database.

So here, we provide instructions in regards to the preparation of the student text. At this point in time, we provide no explicit instructions about the submission of other materials, except that we  accept just about anything related to power engineering, catalog it in the library, and freely disseminate it. The student texts, on the other hand, are available only to approved PowerLearn users, since they are peer-reviewed material.

We refer to the individual preparing a student text as the author. The author must be a registered and approved PowerLearn user (go here for new user registration). The steps necessary for preparing the student text are quite simple, given as follows:

1. Review the module standards. These provide the motivation and philosophy for the modular instructional development approach, intended breadth of coverage per module, how modules are used, the module naming convention, and nomenclature requirements.

2. Download the module template, which is a WORD file that provides all of the necessary format requirements for section headings, figures, tables, equations, etc.

3. Insert the desired material into the module template. This step requires the bulk of the work by the author. The quality of the material is expected to be comparable to that of a chapter in a textbook, and it will be peer-reviewed on that basis.

4. Login to the PowerLearn site and go to the author page (note that you are not allowed to go to this page unless you are a registered and approved PowerLearn user) where you will find a button to upload a new module. The module uploading process will require that you provide information about the module so that proper reviewers can be selected and so that it can be appropriately catalogued.

The outcome of the review will be communicated to you as soon as it is done. Possible outcomes include (1) accepted as is, (2) accepted with mandatory changes, and (3) rejected. If the module is accepted with mandatory changes, then you will be required to address them and resubmit the module.
